The first of the holiday weekends this winter is just about over. Now that the cooking, cleaning up, and putting away are finally over, hostesses have time to think about the things that have made them thankful.
Carol Francois and P Segal have a lot to be thankful for. First there was Carol’s dream, which turned into the story of The Adventures of Sasha and Malia at The White House. Sometimes our dreams are golden inspirations, the beginnings of things that will give us a great deal of pleasure, and maybe recognition and success.
There are thanks for a seamless collaboration to be remembered also. It isn’t always easy for two different people to work together on a single project and never disagree—or if they do have opposite opinions, to be gracious in recognizing the wisdom of the other’s point of view.
We must be thankful for our fantasies that our work will lead to something good. Those fantasies make our days easier, while we have them, even if we don’t have the same outcome in the long run that we take so much pleasure in imagining.
Of course we are thankful that the Obama family did not oppose our use of the First Children for our heroines, and that their charming children should have inspired the story.
Thanks must certainly be given to the radio hosts, journalists, and publicist who have told us they want to feature our book, or have scheduled us to appear on their shows and pages. Our radio appearances so far have been fantastically entertaining, and our hosts have made us feel like we have done something wonderful.
The educators and librarians who have wanted the book for their classes or on their shelves give writers a very special feeling of thankfulness. Their support says that the two years of work that went into the creation of a book for children resulted in something that will help them grow and learn. We are thankful for their support, and for the work they do, every day, in shaping young minds.
Last, but perhaps first, writers are thankful for readers, the fans who take the time to like us on our Facebook page, and the people who buy our book. When someone buys your book, it means they believe that it will make a child happy, teach them something they should know, and be a worthy reward for money spent.
